Flight was at 8am so had to be up early. Turns out that wasn't a problem as both of us were awake by about 3am. Brain still on UK time. Got up around 4am and got ready. Went down to breakfast at 5am. Both had something to eat although we weren't particularly hungry.
By 5.50am we were out of the room and down to reception to wait for the shuttle to the airport. Bus turned up and unlike yesterday we were allowed on. Got to SeaTac and had to do our own baggage labels again. Went through security. For some reason the body scanner said I was invalid. Eventually it changed its mind and I was allowed through.
Got a train across to the gate, picked up some snacks and then it was time to board Alaska Airlines. Most people boarding seemed to be carrying fishing rods. Again we were slightly above scum class. There was a really solid divide between us and first class.
Not sure what it achieves |
Flight was delayed a touch as some people decided to be very late. It lasted just over three hours. It was old school. No entertainment of any kind. Some drinks and a pack of biscuits was all that was on offer. Passed the time doing some school work which I had brought for precisely these occasions. Ate some Sun Chips we had bought, the thing I miss most when we are not here! Touched down in Anchorage at around 11am. Collected our bags and then put them into the baggage storage facility as we could not get into the accommodation until 3pm and we didn't want to drag suitcases around. Saw a polar bear.
Not sure why it is roaming the airport |
We went to a car hire place to discuss a booking we had made for Thursday. We had spent months trying to sort cars out for when we needed them but with no avail. Eventually we had to pay a deposit to a specialised 4x4 hire place as it was all we could book. Found out yesterday that we can now book through Enterprise like we normally do as we are members and it is half the price. Unfortunately we had to give 3 days notice to cancel the other booking in order to get the deposit back but there was only 48hours left. Made up an excuse about insurance to the people to see if they felt sorry for us. They did and refunded the deposit. Result. Immediately booked an Enterprise car for Thursday instead.
Realised Alaska is cold as soon as we went outside the airport. Ann booked an Uber and it turned up swiftly and took us here: Alaska Aviation Air Museum
Wandered around reading about the history of Alaskan flying and saw some planes.

Once we were done we got another Uber to flyinak.com Restaurant. Google maps stated it was busier than normal. We arrived to find only one person in it. Said to Ann what must it be like when it's quiet! Had a quick bite to eat before Ubering back to the airport to get the luggage. Collected it and then summoned a fourth Uber of the day to take us to our accommodation. Uber arrived but was invisible. Eventually worked out he was directly below us on a different level outside the airport. Eventually found him and made our way here.
Found the key and got in. Sat down for a bit before heading out to a grocery store to get supplies. Had something to eat then got down to writing this. Ann is inevitably asleep despite the fact it is 8.30pm and very light outside. To be fair I am nearly nodding off writing this as it feels like 5.30am to me. So now I will finish.
